Which PS5 port actually works with a Cronus Zen for NBA 2K27, and why a firmware update can break your pairing before Fadeaway even loads.

I plugged a Zen into three different PS5 ports this week while checking setup notes for Fadeaway 2.2. Two worked without drama. One did not.

The short answer

Use a rear USB-A port on the PS5. That's it, that's the recommendation.

The rear ports are the two USB-A slots near the power connector, and they behave consistently across PS5 firmware revisions. Front ports cause more support tickets than any other single wiring question, mostly because the front USB-C port needs an adapter and adapters vary wildly in quality.

Here's what each PS5 port does with a Cronus Zen in the middle.

The Zen itself connects to controller and console with its own cables, so this table is about where the console-side cable lands.

My take is the front USB-C route isn't worth the risk, because a bad adapter introduces a signal issue that looks like a controller problem, and that wastes a support conversation on a cheap cable.

Why port choice matters for Fadeaway

Fadeaway 2.2 for 2K27 does a lot of native-button timing work. The patch notes for the 09.02.26 build describe quick taps held for 40ms so a steal or pump fake input doesn't get dropped. That kind of timing depends on a clean, low-latency USB path from controller through Zen to console.

A flaky port adds jitter to that path.

Sometimes that jitter shows up as an input that registers later than expected, or as the GLOBAL offset drifting for no obvious reason between sessions. Rule out the port before touching the menu.

Firmware updates and controller pairing

PS5 firmware updates are the other half of this problem. When Sony pushes a system update, it can reset how the console remembers paired controllers, even ones connected through a Zen. I've seen this happen after a routine update: the Zen stayed connected fine, but the console stopped recognizing the DualSense on the other end until it was re-synced.

Re-syncing takes about a minute.

Unplug the controller from the Zen, connect it directly to the PS5 with a USB cable, let the system re-pair it, then reconnect it to the Zen's controller side. Skip this step and Fadeaway can load onto the Zen correctly while the console still shows no controller detected, which looks like a script failure but isn't one.

What I actually checked

I went back through the Fadeaway page and the patch notes before writing this. Fadeaway 2.2 was released 2026-09-02, it's the eighth public build in that changelog, and the install is described as a single browser flash that takes about a minute. None of that changes based on which PS5 port you use.

The fragile part is everything upstream of the Zen: cable quality, port choice, and firmware state.

A quick setup order that avoids most problems

Do these in order and you'll skip most of the port-related support questions we see.

• Plug the Zen into a rear USB-A port on the PS5, not the front USB-C.
• Update PS5 firmware first, before flashing anything, so you're not chasing two problems at once.
• After any firmware update, re-sync the controller directly to the console before reconnecting it to the Zen.
• Flash Fadeaway from the browser once the controller shows as recognized.
• Confirm the Zen menu registers offline before you go online and rely on GLOBAL.

That last step isn't a port issue, it's just good practice with Fadeaway 2.2, since GLOBAL is meant to be the only setting you touch once you're online.

Front USB-C, if you have no other option

Some people only have the front port free because the rear ports are already committed to a monitor or capture card.

If that's you, use a rated USB-C to USB-A adapter, not a bargain one.

Cheap adapters cut corners on the data lines, and a Zen is sensitive to that in a way a controller alone usually isn't. I'd rather see someone move a capture card cable to free up a rear port than run a Zen through a two dollar adapter, because the failure mode is intermittent, and intermittent problems are hard to diagnose over Discord.

Where this fits with the rest of your setup

Port choice is a small piece of a bigger setup process. Getting the Zen recognized by the browser, choosing an empty slot, and flashing the current build are separate steps with their own failure points. If your Zen isn't showing up in the browser at all, that's a different problem from a port that connects but behaves inconsistently under load.

Most support requests that mention the script "feels off" trace back to either a bad port or a stale pairing, not the script itself.
